On March 27, 2024, at approximately 7 p.m., Laurinburg Police Department officers responded to reports of gunfire in the Covenant Way area of Laurinburg, North Carolina. Upon arrival, they discovered 84-year-old resident Cleophus Daniel Bass deceased in a neighboring yard from an apparent gunshot wound.
Preliminary investigations indicated that a neighborhood dispute had escalated into an exchange of gunfire between Bass and another individual.
During this confrontation, Bass sustained a fatal gunshot wound. Authorities detained a person of interest at the scene; however, as of the latest available information, no formal arrests had been made, and the investigation remained ongoing.
In the wake of his passing, a memorial service for Cleophus Bass was held on April 7, 2024, at East Laurinburg Baptist Church, where family and community members gathered to honor his memory.
