Eddie McLain, a 72-year-old man from Laurinburg, North Carolina, tragically lost his life on July 25, 1998. The incident began when Larry Patterson, who had been arguing with McLain for several days, shot and killed him. Patterson then opened fire on other people in the front yard but did not hit anyone. He later ambushed officers at the crime scene, shooting Laurinburg Police Sergeant Doug Bowen in the leg before turning the weapon on himself.
