The shooting took place at the intersection of Main Street and Church Street, and Christopher was transported to Scotland Memorial Hospital in critical condition. He was later airlifted to a secondary location but succumbed to his injuries. Another victim, Jerquarie Avery, 26, was also in the vehicle and sustained injuries but was treated and released from the hospital.
The investigation into Christopher's death revealed that the suspect's vehicle was observed traveling on U.S. Route 401. Deputies from the Scotland County Sheriff's Office pursued the vehicle, which led to a high-speed chase reaching speeds of over 100 mph. The suspect, Webster Dionte Smith, 28, was apprehended and charged with murder, two counts of attempted murder, discharging a weapon into an occupied moving vehicle, and discharging a firearm in the city limits. Smith was jailed without bond, and the investigation is ongoing, with additional suspects and charges possible.
Christopher John Flowers had a history of legal troubles. In 2017, he was arrested and charged with murder in the shooting death of Carlos McKay at the Reflexxions Club in Hamer, South Carolina. He was also charged with possession of a stolen firearm, carrying concealed, and a fugitive warrant out of Dillon. Flowers had previously been arrested on charges of larceny, breaking and entering a motor vehicle, carrying concealed, probation violations, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Despite his troubled past, his death remains a tragic event that has left his family and community in mourning.
