On January 16, 2024, at approximately 6:15 p.m., deputies from the Scotland County Sheriff's Office responded to reports of a gunshot victim on Ninth Street in East Laurinburg, North Carolina. Upon arrival, they discovered 25-year-old Isaiah Emmanuel Smith, a resident of the Bayfield Community, who had suffered a fatal gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene.
In the days following the incident, a 15-year-old suspect was arrested and charged with first-degree murder.
Due to the individual's juvenile status, their identity was not disclosed.
Subsequent investigations led to the arrest of 18-year-old Zeonte Quentez McNeill of Laurinburg on February 6, 2024. McNeill was charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder in connection with Smith's death. He was held without bond in the Scotland County Detention Center.
Further developments on February 7, 2024, resulted in the apprehension of two additional teenagers: a 17-year-old male and a 16-year-old female. Both were charged with accessory before and after the fact to first-degree murder, as well as conspiracy to commit first-degree murder. Their names were withheld due to their juvenile status, and they were placed in the custody of the Department of Juvenile Justice.
Isaiah Smith was remembered as a cherished son and father. Born on November 28, 1998, in Laurinburg, he enjoyed camping, fishing, and spending time with family and friends. He is survived by his mother, Amy Smith, his children, and siblings. His funeral services were held on January 27, 2024, at the Richard Boles Funeral Service Chapel, followed by burial in Hillside Memorial Park.
