On July 8, 2023, at approximately 8:30 p.m., Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) officers responded to an assault with a deadly weapon call at the intersection of North Tryon Street and McCullough Drive in Charlotte, North Carolina. Upon arrival, they discovered 35-year-old Stacy Deshawn Herring suffering from a gunshot wound. Paramedics pronounced him deceased at the scene.
In the course of their investigation, CMPD detectives identified 24-year-old Santerio Dmon Brice as a suspect in Herring's murder. On July 10, 2023, with assistance from the Cabarrus County Sheriff's Office, CMPD's Violent Criminal Apprehension Team apprehended Brice in Midland, North Carolina. He was transported to the Law Enforcement Center in Uptown Charlotte for questioning and subsequently charged with murder.
The arrest was facilitated by surveillance footage from the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) McCullough Light Rail Station, which provided critical evidence linking Brice to the crime. CMPD also acknowledged the support of Allied Universal Security Services and CATS in the initial stages of the investigation.
Herring's death marked the second homicide in the University City area that evening, prompting CMPD to appeal for any additional information from the public to aid their ongoing investigation.
A funeral service for Stacy Deshawn Herring was held on July 20, 2023, at Hope Valley Hawkins Funeral Chapel in Clinton, North Carolina, followed by burial at Sandhill Cemetery. He is survived by his father, four children, and several siblings.
