On the night of February 20, 2024, at approximately 10:30 p.m., officers from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) responded to a reported shooting in the 400 block of Berkeley Hill Drive, situated in Charlotte's University City area. Upon arrival, they discovered 36-year-old Dontarious Jerrelle Simpson suffering from a gunshot wound. Emergency medical personnel pronounced him deceased at the scene.
