On the evening of May 6, 2023, at approximately 9:00 p.m., Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) officers responded to a reported assault with a deadly weapon in the 5800 block of Old Providence Road in Charlotte, North Carolina. Upon arrival, they discovered 43-year-old Gerald McQueary suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency medical services transported McQueary to Atrium Health's Carolinas Medical Center, where he was later pronounced deceased.

The incident occurred near the Gladedale Apartments, a typically quiet residential area. Neighbors and friends described McQueary as a long-term resident who had lived in the community for over two decades. In the aftermath of the shooting, community members expressed their grief and held a memorial to honor his life. One friend remarked, "He was the life of the party... He was a light to everybody."

CMPD's Homicide Unit launched an investigation into McQueary's death, processing the scene and collecting physical evidence. Despite these efforts, no arrests have been made, and the suspects remain unidentified. Detectives have urged anyone with information to contact the Homicide Unit directly or provide information anonymously through Crime Stoppers.

In a concerning development, two days after McQueary's death, on May 8, 2023, shots were fired into the apartment where his family resided. Although no injuries were reported, a bullet was found lodged in a bedroom headboard. CMPD has not disclosed any known motive for this subsequent shooting, and it remains unclear if it is connected to McQueary's homicide.

As of December 2024, the investigation into Gerald McQueary's death remains active and ongoing. CMPD continues to seek assistance from the public, encouraging anyone with relevant information to come forward to aid in bringing closure to this case.
