On August 27, 2023, at approximately 2:00 p.m., deputies from the Robeson County Sheriff's Office responded to a reported shooting in the 500 block of Old Landing Road in Maxton, North Carolina. Upon arrival, they discovered 55-year-old Phillip Locklear, a resident of Longs, South Carolina, deceased from a gunshot wound.
Following an investigation by the Sheriff's Homicide Division, 78-year-old Maxton resident Sturgeon Locklear was arrested and charged with second-degree murder in
connection with Phillip's death. He was taken into custody at the Robeson County Detention Center, with bond set at $100,000.
The relationship between Phillip and Sturgeon Locklear, if any, has not been publicly disclosed. Authorities have not released further details regarding the circumstances leading to the shooting.
