On December 27, 2023, at approximately 9:15 a.m., 15-year-old Amir Kidd and 16-year-old Tzion Dae were fatally shot at the Evoke Living at Sugar Creek Apartments on Merlane Drive in northeast Charlotte, North Carolina. Both teenagers sustained life-threatening injuries and were transported to Atrium Health's Carolinas Medical Center, where they were pronounced dead.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) responded promptly to the scene.
Deputy Chief Zeru Chickoree addressed the media, expressing the department's condolences and emphasizing the tragedy of losing young lives, especially during the holiday season. He noted that, at that time, there was no indication of an ongoing threat to the public.
In the immediate aftermath, CMPD detectives initiated a comprehensive investigation. By December 28, 2023, authorities announced that they were not seeking any additional persons in connection with the case. This development suggested that the incident might have been isolated, with no further suspects at large.
The deaths of Amir and Tzion contributed to a concerning trend of increased gun violence among teenagers in Charlotte. Community leaders and law enforcement officials expressed deep concern over the rising number of young individuals falling victim to such violence.
