On April 28, 2024, at approximately 2:30 a.m., Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) officers responded to a call regarding an assault with a deadly weapon in the 7800 block of Douglas Drive, located in the Steele Creek area of Charlotte, North Carolina. Upon arrival, officers discovered 21-year-old Bryan Miller Eakin with an apparent gunshot wound. Paramedics from MEDIC pronounced him deceased at the scene.
Initially, the incident was treated as a death investigation.
However, as detectives from CMPD's Homicide Unit delved deeper into the circumstances surrounding Eakin's death, they reclassified the case as a homicide. Their investigation led to the identification of 20-year-old Olivia Nicole Cain as a suspect. On May 1, 2024, CMPD's Violent Criminal Apprehension Team located and arrested Cain. She was transported to the Law Enforcement Center in Uptown Charlotte, where she was interviewed by detectives. Following the interview, Cain was charged with murder and transferred to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office.
Details regarding the motive behind the shooting or the nature of the relationship between Eakin and Cain have not been publicly disclosed. Eakin, known to family and friends as Miller, was remembered as a beloved son, fiancé, father, and brother. Born on July 15, 2002, in Rock Hill, South Carolina, he had a passion for water sports and fishing. In the two years preceding his death, he traveled across the United States, dedicating himself to becoming a skilled tile setter and learning to operate heavy machinery. He is survived by his parents, Melanie Rhyne Eakin and Bryan Eakin; his stepmother, Brandy; his children, Colton and Elizabeth; and several siblings and extended family members.
A memorial service to honor Eakin's life was held on May 12, 2024, at Wright Funeral Home in York, South Carolina. Family and friends were invited to share their condolences and memories, celebrating the life of a young man who touched many with his infectious smile and eagerness to learn.
