Michael Guy Johnston, 32, was last seen on July 22, 1981, in Brigham City, Utah. On the night of his disappearance, Johnston had met Debbie Griffiths at a local bar. They played pool and spent time together, much to the jealousy of Rudy Matthew Rebeterano, Griffiths' ex-husband. Griffiths and Rebeterano had a turbulent relationship, with his jealousy having led to violent outbursts in the past.
Early in the morning of July 22, Johnston accompanied Griffiths back to her apartment. Upon entering, they encountered Rebeterano, who angrily confronted Johnston. Griffiths quickly left the apartment, hearing what sounded like a violent altercation between the two men. Shortly after, she saw Rebeterano carrying a large white bundle, which he loaded into the trunk of Johnston's car before driving away.
Later that day, Johnston's car was found abandoned nearby, with bloodstains matching Johnston's blood type inside the vehicle and around the trunk. Despite extensive investigations, Johnston's body was never found. Rebeterano was convicted of second-degree murder in the case, making it one of Utah's first murder convictions without the recovery of a body. He served his sentence but has since been released. Authorities continue to search for Johnston’s remains.
