On March 29, 2024, at approximately 11:42 p.m., Washington Police Department officers and Washington Fire and Rescue responded to a reported shooting in the 500 block of Haven Street in Washington, North Carolina. Upon arrival, they discovered 43-year-old Jimmy Lee Ruffin Jr. suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. Despite immediate medical attention, Ruffin was pronounced dead at the scene.
The initial investigation revealed that Ruffin and the alleged shooter, 54-year-old Quinton Boston, were acquainted, and that the incident stemmed from a dispute over money. Boston, a resident of Washington, was arrested and charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He was subsequently released on a $5,000 unsecured bond.
Authorities have indicated that both the involved parties and witnesses are cooperating with the ongoing investigation. As of the latest available information, no additional charges have been filed, and the case remains under active investigation by the Washington Police Department.
In the wake of his passing, Ruffin's family and friends gathered to honor his memory. A public viewing and celebration of life were held on April 14, 2024, at Southside High School in Chocowinity, North Carolina. Ruffin, affectionately known as "JJ," was remembered for his outgoing nature, love of basketball and pool, and his ability to make others smile. He is survived by his father, children, grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and close friends.
