Shamari Parker, a 20-year-old Black male and leukemia survivor, was tragically shot and killed on January 7, 2025, in Washington, North Carolina. Parker, who was in his final semester at East Carolina University studying construction management, was found dead inside his vehicle following an apparent attempted robbery. Authorities responded to reports of a vehicle collision at an intersection in Beaufort County, where they discovered Parker suffering from a gunshot wound.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators believe Parker was driving his vehicle when two suspects, 17-year-old Zaydrian Starkie and 16-year-old Quamir Razor, were inside with him. At some point, the suspects allegedly shot Parker before fleeing the scene, causing his vehicle to crash into a pole. The firearm used in the shooting did not belong to Parker, according to authorities. Starkie was arrested on January 8, 2025, and charged with murder and armed robbery. He is currently being held in a juvenile detention facility. Razor remains at large, and police are actively searching for him in connection with the crime.
Parker’s mother, Cortyne Woolard, shared that her son was a hardworking individual, often working long shifts as a stocker at Walmart while pursuing his education. She recalled her last interaction with him, when he transferred her money for a basketball game ticket just hours before his death. Woolard also mentioned that Parker had asked for a gun the previous Christmas, which she hesitantly gifted him due to his responsible nature. Authorities suspect that the firearm may have been a motive in the robbery.
The Washington Police Department continues to investigate the case, urging anyone with information to come forward. Parker’s family and friends are mourning his loss, remembering him as a dedicated student and a resilient individual who had overcome significant health challenges. A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to assist with funeral expenses, as the community rallies to support his loved ones during this difficult time.
