On May 4, 2024, at approximately 3:11 a.m., Fayetteville police responded to reports of shots fired in the 5300 block of Ramsey Street, near Methodist University. Upon arrival, they found 21-year-old Jonah Malik Taylor, a Fort Liberty soldier and father of two, with gunshot wounds. Taylor was transported to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center by a personal vehicle, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Taylor, originally from Oakland, Mississippi, was a paratrooper assigned to the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division. He was remembered by his commanding officer, Col. Todd Burroughs, as "an exceptional paratrooper, a great teammate, and an outstanding young man." Taylor's death was mourned by his family, including his two young children, and the military community.
An eyewitness reported that the incident began with a fight inside a hookah lounge that spilled into the parking lot, culminating in the shooting. The Fayetteville Police Department launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Taylor's death.
On August 27, 2024, after several months of investigation, 22-year-old Jaivion Omari Robinson was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and robbery with a dangerous weapon in connection with Taylor's death. Court records indicate that Robinson allegedly confronted Taylor and his friends in a parking lot, snatched a chain from someone in Taylor's group, brandished a firearm, and then shot Taylor at point-blank range. At the time of the shooting, Robinson was out on bail for unrelated charges.
Robinson's arrest brought some measure of closure to Taylor's family and the Fort Liberty community, who had been awaiting justice for the young soldier's untimely death. The case highlighted ongoing concerns about violence in the area and underscored the challenges faced by law enforcement in addressing such incidents.
