In the early hours of June 8, 2024, at approximately 12:57 a.m., Winston-Salem police responded to reports of a shooting in the parking lot of Adams Market, located at 3800 Northampton Drive. Upon arrival, officers discovered 33-year-old Daron Lamonta Bines Jr. suffering from a gunshot wound. Emergency medical services transported Bines to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Following an investigation, authorities identified 39-year-old Matthew Maurice Peterson as a suspect in the homicide. On June 11, 2024, the Winston-Salem Police Department's SWAT team, in collaboration with the United States Marshals Service, arrested Peterson. He was charged with felony possession of a firearm by a felon, felony discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle, and felony murder. Peterson was held without bond and was scheduled to appear in court on June 12, 2024.
At the time of the initial reports, authorities had not disclosed information regarding the motive behind the shooting or the events leading up to it. The investigation was ongoing, with police urging anyone with information to come forward.
