Upon arrival, they found most rooms in the house unoccupied, except for a locked bedroom. As deputies attempted to breach the door, a single gunshot was heard from inside.
Inside the room, both Kanisha and Sheldon were found deceased from apparent gunshot wounds.
Sheldon Nealy had a history of violent behavior and criminal activity. Records from the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction reveal that he was released from prison in November 2022 after serving more than a decade for convictions in 2010, including assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury. Prior to that, his criminal record dated back to 1994, with convictions ranging from property damage to drug-related offenses.
The relationship between Kanisha and Sheldon reportedly began while Sheldon was incarcerated. They connected through Facebook, maintained communication during his imprisonment, and eventually married before his release. After his release, Sheldon moved into Kanisha's home, where she lived with her two daughters from a previous relationship. The marriage deteriorated over time, with reports indicating that Sheldon became physically abusive. Following the birth of their child together, Kanisha expressed her desire for a divorce due to the ongoing domestic violence. Tragically, this culminated in the fatal incident on August 4, where Sheldon shot Kanisha multiple times before taking his own life.
Kanisha was a dedicated mother and professional. She worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), earned a degree in Business Administration, purchased a home, and obtained her license to become a bail bondsman. She was the mother of three daughters: Ilaiya (aged 12), Jaleyah (aged 5), and KaMauri (just 1 month old). A GoFundMe campaign was established to support her daughters following her tragic death.
