In the early hours of a Sunday morning in a Brooklyn home, a violent altercation shattered the peace and ended a life. Jacqueline Wilson, a 49-year-old grandmother originally from St. Vincent and the Grenadines, was fatally shot inside her Brownsville residence on May 7, 2023. The tragic event unfolded around 3 a.m. on East 96th Street near Clarkson Avenue, a home where Wilson had lived for at least 15 years.
Neighbors reported hearing the couple arguing shortly before the fatal shots were fired.
The alleged gunman was identified as Peter Hibbert, 48, who had been Wilson's boyfriend for two and a half years. Authorities stated that Hibbert shot Wilson multiple times, striking her in the head, torso, arm, and leg. After the shooting, he allegedly threatened Wilson's daughter, telling her, 'I just shot your mother, and now I'm going to shoot everyone in the house.' This terrifying threat prompted the daughter and her boyfriend to lock themselves in a bedroom with their baby for safety.
Following the shooting, Hibbert engaged in a tense standoff with SWAT teams that lasted for two hours. He was eventually discovered hiding in a crawl space under the home's garden and was taken into custody. Emergency medical services transported Wilson to Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. Hibbert was subsequently charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon. Police records indicated a prior domestic incident between the couple in 2021, with Hibbert as the alleged perpetrator.
