In the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn, a promising young life was abruptly cut short on a Monday evening. Sixteen-year-old Amiere Hayes, a Black male known for his good grades and dreams of playing college basketball, was fatally shot on June 19, 2023. The incident occurred around 5:50 p.m. on Marcus Garvey Boulevard, a location devastatingly close to his home.
Amiere was the youngest of three children and shared a close bond with his mother, a relationship that had deepened following the recent loss of their father just months prior.
According to police reports, two masked individuals approached the teenager and opened fire. Amiere was struck in the head and was quickly transported to a nearby hospital, but his injuries proved fatal. The sudden violence left his family and the community in a state of shock and profound grief. In the days that followed, loved ones gathered for vigils, releasing balloons and lighting candles in his memory. Friends and family remembered him as a respectful and intelligent young man who was a beloved member of his community.
The New York Police Department launched an investigation into the homicide and released surveillance footage of two suspects they believe to be responsible for the shooting. The individuals in the video are described as being between 16 and 18 years old. One was seen wearing a black hooded sweater, white ripped jeans, and a black face mask, while the other wore a black hoodie, gray ripped jeans, and a blue face mask. In the wake of the shooting, students and teachers from the Bedford Stuyvesant New Beginnings Charter School, where Amiere had been a student, held a march calling for justice and an end to gun violence. Despite the release of the surveillance video and the community's pleas for information, no arrests have been publicly announced in connection with the murder of Amiere Hayes. The case remains a painful and unresolved tragedy for his family and all who knew him.
