In the early evening of a late June day in East New York, Brooklyn, a burst of violence shattered the neighborhood's calm. Dennis Morgan, a 40-year-old man, found his life brought to an abrupt and tragic end. On June 28, 2023, at approximately 5:44 p.m., police responded to a 911 call reporting a shooting on the 800 block of Ashford Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered Morgan with a fatal bullet wound to his back.
Despite the immediate response from emergency services, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the shooting quickly led law enforcement to identify potential suspects. The day after Morgan's death, on June 29, the New York Police Department arrested 38-year-old Crystal Smith. She was subsequently charged with manslaughter and two counts of gang assault, suggesting a deeper and more complex motive behind the killing. Just a few days later, a second individual was taken into custody. On July 1, investigators arrested 39-year-old Joseph Black in connection with the homicide. The charges brought against Black were more severe, including murder, manslaughter, two counts of gang assault, and criminal possession of a weapon.
