On a summer evening in Brooklyn, 27-year-old Jahshyim Whitfield, a Black male, was fatally shot while on his way to pick up his daughter from a beauty parlor. The incident occurred on Saturday, July 12, 2025, shortly before 9:30 p.m. outside the Lafayette Gardens public housing complex in the Clinton Hill neighborhood. Whitfield, a resident of Bedford-Stuyvesant, was found on the ground with a gunshot wound to his torso.
Emergency services arrived at the scene near Dekalb and Kent
Avenues and transported Whitfield to New York-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital in critical condition. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital. At the time of the shooting, Whitfield, who worked as a security guard, was waiting to collect his 9-year-old daughter, who was spending the summer with him. He was a father to two young girls.
Family members described Whitfield as a devoted father who cared deeply for his family. His grandmother recalled his affectionate nature and how much he enjoyed her cooking. His sudden death left his family, including his two daughters, devastated by the unexpected loss.
As of the days following the shooting, the New York City Police Department's investigation was ongoing. Authorities had not yet identified a motive for the attack, and no suspects had been publicly named.
