A recent graduate of Henninger High School, the female teenager was looking forward to her future, with dreams of possibly pursuing a career in law. She was known by her loved ones as a vibrant and caring individual who brought joy to those around her.
On that fateful evening, Karlianne was outside a store with a group of people when gunfire erupted.
As she tried to flee the danger, she was struck in the back by a bullet. She was rushed to a local hospital but succumbed to her injuries. Authorities later stated that Karlianne was an innocent bystander and not the intended target of the shooting. The Onondaga County District Attorney described her as a 'quintessential innocent victim.'
In the wake of the tragedy, the Syracuse community mourned the loss of a promising young life. Friends and family gathered for a vigil to remember Karlianne, sharing memories of her infectious smile and positive spirit. They called for an end to the senseless violence that had taken her from them.
The investigation into her death led to a suspect turning himself in to the police. Malcolm Barner, 28, was subsequently arrested and charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon. At his arraignment, Barner pleaded not guilty to the charges. The court denied him bail, and he was remanded into custody to await further legal proceedings. Barner was also facing two pending indictments for drug charges and had previously served five years in state prison.
