On a cold February evening in 2019, the life of 34-year-old Juanita Schley, a Black female, was tragically cut short in Syracuse, New York. On February 18th, Schley was sitting in a parked car on South Salina Street when another vehicle pulled alongside. A man exited the passenger side of the approaching car, opened fire on the vehicle Schley occupied, and then fled the scene. Schley was struck by the gunfire and was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
Another individual in the car with her was also injured but survived. The brazen and violent nature of the attack left the community in shock and mourning the loss of a mother and beloved friend.
The investigation into Juanita Schley's murder led Syracuse Police to identify two suspects: Rafeal Rios, the driver of the getaway vehicle, and Demetrius Williams, the alleged gunman. Both men were subsequently arrested and faced charges in connection with the fatal shooting. The case against them slowly moved through the legal system, culminating in a trial that would reveal the details of that tragic night and the motivations behind the senseless act of violence. Friends and family of Juanita Schley attended the court proceedings, seeking justice for a life taken too soon.
