In the early morning hours of September 3, 2023, a 33-year-old Hispanic man named Javier Sanchez, an immigrant from Ecuador, was fatally shot in the head during a robbery near his Bushwick, Brooklyn home. The incident occurred around 4 a.m. outside a BP gas station at the corner of Myrtle Avenue and Grove Street. Sanchez, who had been in the United States for about a year, worked in construction and as an Uber driver to support his 5-year-old daughter back in Ecuador.
