Carmine "Cigar" Galante, a notorious figure in the New York Mafia, met a violent end on July 12, 1979, in Brooklyn, New York. Galante, who was the de facto boss of the Bonanno crime family, was gunned down in a brutal assassination at Joe & Mary’s Italian-American Restaurant.
