On a cold January evening in Brooklyn, a tragic story of violence unfolded, leaving a family and community in mourning. Kereem C. Morgan, a 23-year-old male, was shot and killed on January 31, 2024. His life was cut short in the Crown Heights neighborhood, at the intersection of Union Street and Utica Avenue.
The circumstances surrounding his death are particularly heart-wrenching.
Morgan was returning from a vigil for his friend, Brandon Nichols, who had been fatally shot just the day before. Concerned for his safety, Morgan's aunt, who had raised him since his mother passed away 17 years prior, had pleaded with him to stay home. Despite her premonitions, he had promised a swift return.
At approximately 6:19 PM, police responded to a report of gunfire and discovered Morgan with multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to NYC Health and Hospitals/Kings County, where he was pronounced dead. Friends and family were left to grapple with the devastating loss of a young man who was honoring the memory of a fallen friend, only to meet the same violent fate.
As of now, the investigation into Kereem Morgan's murder is ongoing. Law enforcement officials have not publicly identified any suspects, and no arrests have been made in connection with his shooting. A viewing for Morgan was held in Brooklyn, and his remains were to be interred at a family plot in Jamaica, West Indies.
