In a heartbreaking turn of events, Luz Maribel Espinal, a 43-year-old Hispanic woman, was found deceased in her Brooklyn, New York, apartment on February 16, 2024. The discovery was made in a first-floor apartment on Logan Street in the Cypress Hills neighborhood after her family grew concerned when she failed to pick up her 7-year-old daughter from school.
Her adult son, a former Marine, went to check on her and, after getting no response, gained entry to the apartment where he found the tragic scene.
Authorities who responded to a 911 call around 4:45 p.m. found Ms. Espinal with a fatal gunshot wound to the head. Alongside her was the body of a 40-year-old man, later identified as her boyfriend, Rafael Romos, who also had a gunshot wound to the head. A firearm was recovered near his body, leading investigators to conclude that the incident was a murder-suicide. The New York City Medical Examiner's Office later confirmed this finding.
Neighbors and the building's superintendent remembered Ms. Espinal, a former home care aide and mother of two adult sons and a young daughter, as a cheerful and popular resident who enjoyed hosting karaoke in her apartment. However, they noted a change in her demeanor after she began a relationship with Romos. He was described by neighbors as 'very controlling' and 'anti-social,' and had allegedly pressured her to delete her social media accounts. The tragedy occurred just a day before her family was set to celebrate her grandson's first birthday. A small memorial with candles was set up near her apartment to honor her memory. As the perpetrator took his own life, no arrests were made in connection with Ms. Espinal's death.
