Deandra Reed, a 30-year-old woman who was Black, was standing near the corner of Georgia Avenue and Belmont Avenue in East New York, Brooklyn, on the evening of October 12, 2021, when a violent dispute nearby turned the sidewalk into a shooting scene.
Police sources described the chaos as coming from a fight involving a small group of teenage boys; in the sudden eruption of gunfire, Reed was struck once in the head, and investigators later worked among scattered shell casings left
behind in the street.
A 911 call brought officers from the NYPD’s 75th Precinct to the intersection, and emergency medical responders rushed Reed to Brookdale University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. In the earliest reporting, authorities had not yet released her identity publicly; soon after, she was identified as Deandra Reed, with NBC New York reporting she was from Philadelphia and that it was unclear whether she was visiting the city or had recently moved.
In the immediate aftermath, detectives had little to hold onto beyond the forensic trail: no clear motive released, no preliminary suspect description offered, and—according to NYPD sources at the time—no arrests made as the investigation remained active.
Public appeals for information followed, with NYPD Crimestoppers later highlighting her killing and urging anyone who knew what happened, or who recognized those involved, to come forward through anonymous tip lines.
