In the Bronx, a dispute that began on social media escalated into a fatal act of violence, claiming the life of 17-year-old Laquai Dash. On the afternoon of March 7, 2024, in the Melrose section of the Bronx, a confrontation unfolded near a playground and an elementary school. Laquai, a student at Legacy College Prep High School, was shot in the neck during the altercation.
Emergency services rushed him to a nearby hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal.
The investigation into the shooting suggested that the dispute involved a fight between the girlfriends of Laquai and the alleged shooter. Surveillance footage reportedly captured the incident as it transpired on the grounds of P.S. 157 Grove Hill Elementary School. According to the Bronx District Attorney's office, Laquai was attempting to break up the fight when he was shot multiple times in the back.
In the days and weeks that followed, authorities made arrests in connection with the killing. One of the first suspects taken into custody was 17-year-old Tyrell Williams, who was charged with murder, manslaughter, and criminal possession of a weapon. Later, 19-year-old Terrell Loyd of Brooklyn was also arrested and indicted on charges of second-degree murder, first-degree manslaughter, and multiple counts of criminal possession of a weapon. Police also released images of a second suspect they were seeking in relation to the fatal shooting.
