New York Police Department Officer Jonathan Diller, a 31-year-old male, was fatally shot on the evening of March 25, 2024, in the Far Rockaway section of Queens. A three-year veteran of the force, Diller was part of the NYPD's Community Response Team. He was married and the father of a one-year-old son.
The fatal encounter began around 5:50 p.m. when Officer Diller and his partner approached a Kia Soul that was illegally parked at a bus stop on Mott Avenue.
When Officer Diller and his partner made contact with the two men in the car, a confrontation ensued. One of the suspects inside the vehicle produced a firearm and shot Officer Diller in the torso, just beneath his bullet-resistant vest. Despite being mortally wounded, Diller was able to get the gun away from the suspect. His partner returned fire, striking the suspect who had fired on Diller.
Officer Diller was rushed to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. His death marked the first line-of-duty killing of an NYPD officer since January 2022. The incident prompted an outpouring of grief from the law enforcement community and the public, with thousands attending his wake and funeral. His death also sparked a debate about crime and punishment policies in New York City, particularly concerning individuals with extensive criminal records.
Two suspects were taken into custody following the shooting. The man who allegedly shot Officer Diller was wounded when Diller's partner returned fire and was taken to a local hospital for treatment. The driver of the vehicle also had a criminal record. The alleged shooter was subsequently charged with first-degree murder. Following his death, Jonathan Diller was posthumously promoted to the rank of Detective First Grade.
