In the early morning hours of May 12, 2024, a burst of violence cut short the life of 34-year-old Nicholas Calhoun in Buffalo, New York. He was fatally shot near the intersection of Kehr Street and Urban Street. A private vehicle rushed Calhoun to Erie County Medical Center but his injuries proved too severe, and he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the death of the male victim swiftly pointed to Emanuel T. Stokes, a 28-year-old from Buffalo.
It was a violent morning for Stokes, as shortly after shooting Calhoun, he proceeded to stab a 15-year-old boy at a residence on Mills Street. The teenage victim was taken to Oishei Children's Hospital and treated for a stab wound to his upper arm and a cut on his neck.
Law enforcement officials apprehended Emanuel Stokes, who was already in pre-trial custody for another violent crime that occurred in April 2024. He was subsequently charged with one count of Murder in the Second Degree for the death of Nicholas Calhoun, as well as assault and endangering the welfare of a child in connection with the stabbing.
On May 16, 2025, Emanuel 'Manny' T. Stokes pleaded guilty to a slate of charges, including Murder in the Second Degree for killing Nicholas Calhoun. He also pleaded guilty to Attempted Murder in the Second Degree, two counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree, and two counts of Assault in the Second Degree for his other violent acts. On July 9, 2025, a State Supreme Court Justice sentenced Stokes to 20 years to life in prison for his crimes.
