In the summer of 2024, a violent altercation on a Monday evening in Syracuse, New York, tragically cut short the life of 42-year-old Sidney Emuel Comrie, a Black/African American man. On June 24th, at approximately 8:22 p.m., Syracuse Police Officers were dispatched to the 100 block of West Calthrop Avenue following reports of a dispute. Upon their arrival, they discovered Comrie suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Emergency medical aid was rendered at the scene before he was rushed to Upstate University Hospital. Despite the extensive efforts of the medical staff, he succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into the homicide was swift. Detectives from the Criminal Investigations Division and the Homicide Unit worked tirelessly, conducting numerous interviews and executing several search warrants. Their efforts led them to identify 32-year-old Dashontay Kirkland as the suspect in the fatal shooting. Just three days after the incident, on June 27, 2024, Kirkland surrendered to authorities at the Public Safety Building. He was subsequently arrested and charged with second-degree murder and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. Kirkland was then detained at the Onondaga County Justice Center to await arraignment.
Sidney Comrie, born on July 16, 1981, in Queens, New York, was a man known for his strong work ethic and deep devotion to his family. He had relocated to Syracuse to be closer to his sons and to pursue better employment opportunities. A loving father, he was actively involved in his children's lives, attending sporting and school events. He is survived by his mother, his three children, Xavier, Nehemiah, and his infant daughter, Seoni, as well as his two sisters. The investigation into his death remains active, and authorities continue to encourage anyone with information to come forward.
