On the evening of January 17, 2023, law enforcement officials in Kansas City, Missouri, were dispatched to the eastern part of the city following reports of gunfire. Just after 6:10 p.m., officers arrived at an apartment complex located in the 10300 block of East 42nd Street, situated just east of Pittman Road. The initial call, which began as a report of shots fired, was quickly upgraded to a shooting investigation as first responders assessed the scene.
Upon arrival, police discovered
a vehicle in the parking lot containing an unresponsive male victim, later identified as 25-year-old Dahrell Johnson. Officers observed that he had sustained gunshot wounds and immediately began performing life-saving measures in an effort to stabilize him. Emergency medical services subsequently transported him to a nearby hospital, but despite the medical intervention, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, detectives and crime scene personnel canvassed the area to search for witnesses and process evidence. At the time of the initial reports, police stated they did not have any description of a suspect, and no arrests were announced in connection with the homicide. The investigation remained active as authorities appealed to the public for any information regarding the circumstances leading to the fatal incident.
