In the early evening of October 4, 2024, a dispute between two men in Kansas City, Missouri, escalated into a fatal encounter, leaving one man dead in the street. The victim was identified as 30-year-old Rommel U. Nolasco-Manuelez. The incident, which marked the city's 122nd homicide of the year, unfolded in the 2000 block of Drury Avenue.
According to witness accounts provided to law enforcement, the tragic chain of events began when Nolasco-Manuelez, driving a white van, sideswiped a
black Chevrolet Malibu belonging to Juan Carlos Hernandez-Alonso. This seemingly minor traffic incident quickly spiraled out of control. Hernandez-Alonso, who was standing outside a residence speaking with a witness, allegedly began shooting at Nolasco-Manuelez's vehicle immediately after the collision.
Following the initial volley of shots, both men exited their vehicles and engaged in a heated argument. Witnesses reported hearing a single gunshot during this confrontation. Hernandez-Alonso then fled the scene in his Malibu. When Kansas City police officers arrived at approximately 8:30 p.m., they discovered Nolasco-Manuelez lying in the street with gunshot wounds. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.
In the subsequent investigation, Juan Carlos Hernandez-Alonso, 21, was identified as the suspect and taken into custody. He reportedly admitted to his involvement, stating that the initial shots were intended 'to earn respect.' He further claimed that he shot Nolasco-Manuelez after the other man swung at him. Following the shooting, Hernandez-Alonso told police he discarded the firearm by throwing it into a nearby river. He has since been charged with second-degree murder and armed criminal action and is being held without bond.
