On the early morning of July 7, 2023, the lifeless body of 19-year-old Jaylin Johnson was discovered in Pagedale, Missouri, a municipality within St. Louis County. Police officers responded to a call regarding a shooting in the 7000 block of St. Charles Rock Road shortly before 1:00 a.m. Upon arrival, they found the young male victim lying on the ground, having suffered fatal gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators determined that Johnson, a resident of Manchester, Missouri, had been the victim of a coordinated robbery and homicide that began miles away in downtown St. Louis.
According to the Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis, Johnson had traveled to the downtown area earlier that night where he encountered a group of individuals. Surveillance footage from the MetroLink light rail system captured the victim and the group boarding a westbound train together. While on the train, cameras recorded one of the suspects, identified as Demetrius Strother, making hand signals and gesturing towards Johnson, communicating with his accomplices to orchestrate an attack. When the train arrived at the station in Pagedale, the entire group, including Johnson, disembarked.
Once off the train, the group followed Johnson a short distance from the station before ambushing him. During the confrontation, he was shot and stripped of his personal belongings, including his cell phone and a firearm he was carrying. Detectives noted that the perpetrators had turned Johnson’s pockets inside out before fleeing the scene. The suspects were seen on surveillance video reboarding an eastbound train immediately after the shooting, with one individual openly carrying the weapon stolen from the victim.
Law enforcement officers eventually arrested a total of seven individuals in connection with the murder. The suspects included adults Demetrius Strother, Kenneth Hall, Steven Marion, and Darnesha Thomas-Perry, as well as multiple juveniles. Prosecutors charged the adults with second-degree murder and first-degree robbery. In August 2025, Demetrius Strother, who was identified as the gunman, pleaded guilty to the charges. A judge sentenced him to life in prison plus an additional ten years for his role in the fatal robbery, bringing a measure of legal closure to the case while charges against other alleged accomplices moved through the court system.
