In the late afternoon of July 13, 2023, a confrontation in a Kansas City, Missouri parking lot turned fatal, claiming the life of 47-year-old Juan Zollar. The incident unfolded around 5:30 p.m. in the parking lot of an Office Depot in the city's Midtown area. According to witness statements, Zollar, a male, had been a passenger in a vehicle that pulled up to a group of people in the lot.
He reportedly exited the car and engaged in a verbal altercation with the individuals, allegedly stating, 'I got something for you,' as he reached for a knife that remained in its sheath.
A woman who was with Zollar warned him that someone in the group had a gun, prompting him to get back into the vehicle. As he was re-entering the car and closing the door, shots were fired, and Zollar was struck. The woman immediately drove away from the scene, flagging down police officers at East 31st Street for assistance. Zollar was rushed to a local hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. This tragic event marked the 107th homicide in Kansas City for the year.
The subsequent police investigation led to the arrest of 38-year-old Dynell Jones. Jones was charged with second-degree murder, two counts of armed criminal action, unlawful use of a weapon, and unlawful possession of a firearm in connection with Zollar's death. During questioning, Jones allegedly admitted to firing his weapon in the direction of the vehicle Zollar was in, claiming that his intention was to scare him away. Investigators found shell casings in an area adjacent to the parking lot, which corroborated the accounts of gunfire. Following his arrest, Jones was scheduled for a bond review hearing on August 21, 2023.
