Jeremy Alan Ridenbaugh, a 36-year-old man from Steubenville, Ohio, was fatally shot on July 24, 2012, in Columbus, OH. He was in Columbus with his girlfriend, Melissa J. Reynolds, 26, to buy Christmas presents for their blended family. The couple was at a house on Republic Avenue in North Linden when the shooting occurred. Ridenbaugh was shot in the chest and abdomen, and Reynolds was shot in the leg.
Ridenbaugh was pronounced dead at Ohio State University’s Wexner Medical Center.
The investigation revealed that Ridenbaugh and Reynolds had come to Columbus to pick up an acquaintance, Brandon Richardson, and give him a ride to Newark. Ridenbaugh also planned to buy cocaine from Richardson during the visit. While at the house, Ridenbaugh and Richardson went into the kitchen to discuss the drug purchase, and Elijah M. Davis, a 20-year-old East Side man, entered the room with a gun. A struggle ensued during which shots were fired. Davis and Richardson fled the scene.
Davis was later charged with involuntary manslaughter in Ridenbaugh's death. He pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced to five years in prison. Richardson was charged with aggravated murder, attempted murder, and aggravated robbery, but the charges were dismissed as part of a plea agreement. Richardson was awaiting trial at the time.
The case faced challenges due to the lack of physical evidence linking Davis or Richardson to the shooting and the problematic witness testimony from Reynolds, who had a falsification conviction. Despite these challenges, Davis was held accountable for his role in the fatal shooting.
The tragic incident left Ridenbaugh's family and friends devastated, and his mother, Gail Ridenbaugh, expressed her desire for justice and the arrest of the person responsible for her son's death.
