On a summer evening in Overland, a suburb of St. Louis, Missouri, 26-year-old Gersain Rugerio-Rodriguez, a male, was dropped off at his home on Baltimore Avenue by his co-workers. It was late on July 18, 2023, and he lingered in his driveway to smoke a cigarette. In a seemingly random act of violence, a gunman drove past, circled back, and opened fire, repeatedly shooting Rugerio-Rodriguez, who died at the scene. The killing happened at approximately 11:30 p.m.
in the 9400 block of Baltimore Avenue.
The investigation into the death of Gersain Rugerio-Rodriguez was extensive, with the Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis assisting the Overland Police Department. In total, 17 detectives from the Major Case Squad and five from the Overland police department were assigned to the case. Investigators could find no prior connection between the victim and the suspected gunman, leading them to believe the two were strangers and that the shooting was a random attack. The authorities believe the homicide was the culmination of a crime spree.
Shortly after the incident, authorities arrested Gavon Simmons, a 26-year-old resident of unincorporated St. Louis County. St. Louis County prosecutors charged him with first-degree murder and armed criminal action in connection with the death of Rugerio-Rodriguez. Simmons was held in the St. Louis County Jail on a $1 million cash-only bond. Investigators believe that on the night of the murder, Simmons had a fight with his girlfriend and her brother outside a Waffle House in Overland and stormed off in a rage. While this domestic dispute is not directly related to the murder, authorities believe it may have triggered the violent events that followed. Simmons was also facing charges of domestic assault, unlawful use of a weapon, stealing, and misdemeanor kidnapping from the earlier incident. He has a history of prior convictions, including drug distribution, burglary, stealing, domestic assault, leaving the scene of an accident, and weapons offenses.
