On March 27, 2015, a violent series of events unfolded in St. Louis, Missouri, resulting in the death of 47-year-old male James Lacey. The incident began when three men, identified as Jacobi Temple, Demante Syms, and Samuel Spires, traveled to a residence in the 4400 block of Itaska Street. Their primary motivation was to collect a drug debt related to the distribution of heroin. The group had been led to the location by Tammie Thurmond, who was the mother of another victim present at the scene.
Upon entering the residence on Itaska Street, the situation escalated into lethal violence. Jacobi Temple, seeking payment for narcotics he had previously distributed, opened fire on the occupants of the home. James Lacey and a 23-year-old woman named Paige Schaefer were both shot and killed inside the house. A third occupant, Brittney Brown, was shot in the head and critically injured but managed to survive the assault. Despite her severe injuries, Brown was able to contact emergency services, an action that later proved pivotal in the investigation.
After the shooting inside the residence, the perpetrators turned their attention to Tammie Thurmond. Temple, Syms, and Spires located her and took her to a nearby alley behind the 4200 block of South 37th Street. It was there that she was shot and killed, marking the third fatality of the day. The violent spree triggered a comprehensive investigation by the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, and federal prosecutors, aimed at addressing the rising homicide rate in the city.
The investigation eventually led to the arrest and federal indictment of the three men involved. Authorities revealed that the killings were directly tied to a conspiracy to distribute heroin. Jacobi Temple, identified as the gunman who killed Lacey and Schaefer, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute heroin and discharging a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking resulting in death. In June 2018, U.S. District Judge John A. Ross sentenced Temple to 50 years in prison. During the sentencing hearing, the survivor, Brittney Brown, provided a victim impact statement detailing her recovery and resilience.
The co-defendants also faced significant legal consequences for their roles in the murders. Demante Syms pleaded guilty and was sentenced to life in prison. In addition to the homicide-related charges, Syms was convicted alongside his mother, Tabitha Hunt, for witness tampering connected to the investigation. The third accomplice, Samuel Spires, also entered a guilty plea and received a sentence of 20 years in federal prison. The successful prosecution of all three individuals closed the case on the triple homicide that claimed the lives of James Lacey, Paige Schaefer, and Tammie Thurmond.
