On a Sunday morning in the wetlands of the Ted Shanks Conservation Area near Ashburn, Missouri, a day of camaraderie and sport turned into a tragedy. Eighteen-year-old Trent William Henry Busch, a high school senior from Winfield, was duck hunting with a group of friends on December 10, 2023, when he was fatally shot. The incident was reported to have been an accident, with a member of his own hunting party firing the shot that ended his life.
Trent, born on October 29, 2005, was an active and beloved member of his community. A student at Winfield High School, he was known for his love of the outdoors, often spending his time bow fishing, waterfowl hunting, and riding his ATV. He was a talented athlete, having played as a goalie for his high school's soccer team and also participating in baseball and football. Friends and family remember him for his infectious love for life and boundless energy.
The Pike County Sheriff's Department and the Missouri Department of Conservation investigated the shooting. Authorities stated early on that they did not suspect any malicious intent, viewing the event as a heartbreaking hunting accident. In the wake of the tragedy, Trent's mother expressed that her son was with two of his close friends when the shooting occurred and that he would not have held any ill will towards his friend for what happened. No arrests were made in connection with the incident.
The loss of the young man was deeply felt in his hometown of Winfield. The school district superintendent described Trent as a 'tremendous young man' who was loved by students and staff alike. His family, while grieving, chose to honor his memory by requesting that memorials be made to NubAbility Outdoors/Athletics, an organization that had supported Trent after the loss of his hand and helped him rediscover his passion for hunting and welding.
