On the afternoon of Monday, February 5, 2024, the community of South St. Louis County, Missouri, was shaken by a violent tragedy involving a group of teenagers. Tyree Isaiah Williams, a 16-year-old male sophomore at Hancock High School, was fatally wounded during an encounter that transpired in the parking lot of the Black Forest Apartments, located near the 5600 block of Chalet Forest Drive in the Oakville area.
Tyree, known to his loved ones for his affectionate nature and love for swimming, wrestling, and basketball, had traveled to the location alongside his close friend, 15-year-old Colin Courtwright, and a third unidentified male companion.
The incident unfolded around 1:50 p.m. when the three youths met with two other young men, allegedly to conduct a transaction involving marijuana cartridges. According to investigators, Tyree and his friends approached a vehicle occupied by the suspects to examine the merchandise. During the interaction, the situation escalated rapidly into gun violence. Shots rang out, striking all three of the victims. Colin Courtwright sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by responding authorities. Tyree Williams was struck multiple times, suffering gunshot wounds to his legs and head. Emergency responders transported him to a local hospital in critical condition, but he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival. The third victim, who was also shot, survived the attack and was treated at an area hospital.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, St. Louis County Police launched a homicide investigation, quickly identifying the incident as a targeted drug-related dispute rather than a random act of violence. By the following day, February 6, prosecutors had issued charges against two suspects: 19-year-old Tyler Coleman and 18-year-old Zachary Hough. Both suspects were students at Oakville High School and had been members of the school's football team. They were arrested and charged with two counts of second-degree murder, two counts of armed criminal action, and a felony count for the delivery of a controlled substance.
The judicial proceedings began swiftly, with both Coleman and Hough ordered to be held on $500,000 cash-only bonds. The probable cause statement released by the St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office detailed that the victims were shot while inside or near the defendants' vehicle during the course of the drug deal. As the legal process moved forward, Tyree was mourned by a large extended family, including his parents, Patricia Rensing and Terrain Williams, as well as multiple siblings and grandparents, who remembered him as a determined young man with a radiant smile who loved his family fiercely.
