In the early hours of February 22, 2024, the quiet of a Springfield, Missouri neighborhood was broken by the sound of gunshots. When police responded to the area near South Campbell Avenue and Walnut Lawn Street at approximately 12:22 a.m., they discovered evidence of a potential crime scene in the road. Not long after, at 12:36 a.m., 19-year-old Reggie Carey and 21-year-old Trevin Dicks arrived at Cox South Hospital, both suffering from gunshot wounds.
Despite medical efforts, both men succumbed to their injuries and were pronounced dead.
Investigations into the double homicide revealed a complex and tragic story of a robbery gone wrong. According to court documents, Carey and Dicks had allegedly conspired with others to rob an individual under the guise of a marijuana deal. The plan was to lure the target into a vehicle where Carey and Dicks, armed with a rifle and a handgun, would be waiting to ambush him. However, the intended victim was also armed and managed to draw his own handgun during the ensuing struggle. He fired multiple shots into the back passenger area of the SUV, fatally wounding both Carey and Dicks. Witnesses at the scene attempted to drive the two injured men to the hospital, but they did not survive the journey.
Following the incident, Springfield police arrested two individuals in connection with the deaths. Nineteen-year-old Tarrin Dicks, the sister of Trevin Dicks, and 18-year-old Izaiah Crabb, both from Springfield, were taken into custody. They were subsequently charged with two counts of second-degree murder, one count of first-degree robbery, and one count of armed criminal action. The charges were filed under Missouri's felony murder rule, which holds individuals responsible for any deaths that occur during the commission of a felony. The case marked the second homicide investigation of 2024 in Springfield.
