On July 4, 2024, at approximately 3:00 p.m., Kansas City police responded to a shooting near East 69th Street and Brooklyn Avenue. Upon arrival, officers discovered 32-year-old Cortez Jawan Caples unresponsive on the sidewalk in front of a residence. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
