On the afternoon of July 4, 2024, law enforcement officials in Kansas City, Missouri, were called to a residential neighborhood to investigate reports of a shooting. At approximately 3:00 p.m., officers arrived near the 2200 block of East 69th Terrace and Brooklyn Avenue, where they located 32-year-old Black male Cortez Jawan Caples lying unresponsive on the sidewalk in front of a home.
