On the night of September 3, 2024, Kansas City police officers patrolling near 55th Street and Prospect Avenue heard gunshots around 11:30 p.m. Upon investigation, they discovered 39-year-old Shroy Lapsely and an unidentified woman at the intersection of 55th Street and South Benton Avenue, both suffering from gunshot wounds.
