In the early morning hours of June 12, 2023, the quiet parking lot of the Rieck Avenue Elementary School in Millville, New Jersey, became the scene of a grim discovery. A 20-year-old Caucasian male, Markie Hoffman, was found unresponsive inside a vehicle. Authorities were called to the scene at approximately 5 a.m. and discovered that Hoffman had sustained a fatal gunshot wound.
His sudden and tragic death sent ripples of shock and grief through his community.
Markie, known to his loved ones as a passionate competitor, had a love for baseball, basketball, and video games. He had overcome significant obstacles in his young life, including a serious car accident and a battle with Juvenile Diabetes. His life, however, was cut short by an act of violence that left his family and friends mourning an immeasurable loss. In the days that followed, a candlelight vigil was held at Millville City Park, where friends and relatives gathered to honor his memory, asked to wear his favorite color, blue.
The investigation into Hoffman's death moved swiftly. Within days, law enforcement identified a suspect. On Wednesday, June 15, 2023, an 18-year-old from the nearby city of Vineland, Emmanuel B. Doivilus, was arrested in connection with the killing. Doivilus was taken into custody and subsequently charged with murder, aggravated assault, and several weapons offenses, including possessing a weapon on school grounds. He was being held in the Cumberland County jail pending a detention hearing. While an arrest was made, a motive for the shooting was not immediately released to the public as the investigation remained ongoing.
