In the late hours of a winter evening in Millville, New Jersey, the sound of gunfire shattered the night's calm. On February 17, 2023, at approximately 10:39 p.m., police responded to reports of shots fired in the vicinity of 4th and E Streets. Upon their arrival, they discovered a man lying wounded. He was identified as Lamont O'Neill Jones Jr., a 33-year-old male from the nearby city of Bridgeton.
He had sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his chest.
Emergency responders acted quickly, airlifting Jones to Cooper University Hospital in Camden for urgent medical care. Despite their efforts, the severity of his injuries proved to be overwhelming, and he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital. The investigation into the death of Lamont Jones Jr. was a collaborative effort between the Millville Police Department and the Cumberland County Prosecutor's Office Major Crimes Unit. Both Maurice Jones and Edwin Torres were charged with first-degree conspiracy to commit murder, in addition to weapons offenses. Following their arrests, the state moved for their pre-trial detention.
