On a summer evening in Bridgeton, New Jersey, the life of 16-year-old TrahZir Bennett was tragically cut short. The Black / African American male teenager from nearby Millville was fatally shot on June 25, 2023, at approximately 8:50 p.m. on Mount Vernon Street. Known affectionately as 'Zir,' he was remembered by loved ones as a wonderful son, a caring brother, and a loving father to his young daughter.
The investigation into the shooting moved swiftly, and within days, a suspect was in
custody. On June 30, 2023, authorities arrested a 16-year-old in connection with Bennett's death. Due to the suspect's age, their identity was not publicly released. The arrest brought a series of serious charges against the teen, including murder and conspiracy to commit murder.
Further investigation led to additional charges against the juvenile suspect, which included destruction of evidence, obstruction of the administration of justice, and hindering apprehension. The Cumberland County Prosecutor's Office announced their intention to seek pre-trial detention for the accused. While an arrest was made, authorities indicated that the investigation remained active and ongoing as they continued to piece together the circumstances that led to the fatal shooting.
