In the late summer of 2017, a burst of gunfire shattered the night in Bridgeton, New Jersey, forever altering the lives of several families. On August 8th, 25-year-old Eric Blocker was with two companions when they were suddenly ambushed. Blocker and a 24-year-old woman were seated inside a car, while a 22-year-old woman stood just outside of it, when shots rang out, striking all three of them. In the aftermath, investigators would find a chaotic scene, recovering 23 shell casings.
While all three victims were rushed for medical attention, Eric Blocker succumbed to his injuries the following day, on August 9, 2017.
The investigation into the triple shooting and Blocker's death continued for months. Then, in February of 2018, authorities announced a major breakthrough in the case. Four men from Bridgeton were taken into custody and charged in connection with the violent incident that had claimed a young man's life and wounded two others. The suspects were identified as 19-year-old William Jackson IV, 20-year-old Tywone Allen Jr., 30-year-old Andrew W. Wescoat, and 27-year-old Marvin German Jr.
The charges brought against the four men varied in severity, reflecting their alleged roles in the fatal shooting. Jackson, Allen, and Wescoat faced the most serious charges, including murder and conspiracy to commit murder, and were held in jail. The fourth man, Marvin German Jr., was charged with conspiracy to commit aggravated assault and was subsequently released pending a future court appearance. The arrests marked a significant step forward in a case that had left a community searching for answers and a family grieving a profound loss.
