In the quiet community of Bridgeton, New Jersey, the life of 23-year-old Jonathan 'Jon Jon' Morris, a man described by his family as a 'gentle giant,' came to a tragic and unexpected end. Morris, a male, was last seen after his work shift on a Thursday in late January 2022. He had plans to go out with friends, a common pastime for the young man known for his big heart and caring nature.
His family last had contact with him through a Snapchat post early the next morning, after which all communication ceased.
Concern grew when Morris's mother's BMW, which he had been driving, was discovered abandoned and still running on Archie Platt Road in the neighboring Hopewell Township. This discovery prompted a frantic search by his family and friends over a snow-covered weekend. Their worst fears were realized when Morris's body was found, covered in snow, about 15 feet from the road where the car had been left.
The investigation into his disappearance and death quickly led New Jersey State Police to a suspect: 21-year-old Miguel Perez of Bridgeton. Investigators determined that Perez, who was known to be an acquaintance and former high school friend of Morris, had allegedly shot and killed him inside the vehicle while they were in Bridgeton. Following the shooting, Perez is believed to have driven the car to Archie Platt Road, where he disposed of Morris's body and abandoned the vehicle. In an attempt to conceal his actions, Perez then allegedly went to a residence on Cottage Avenue to get rid of evidence.
Miguel Perez was arrested at his home and subsequently charged with murder, desecration of human remains, and a host of other related offenses. While a motive for the killing was not immediately released by authorities, the community was left to grapple with the senseless loss of a young man remembered for his kind and gentle spirit. The arrest of a former friend only deepened the tragedy for a family and community mourning a life cut short.
