In the early morning hours of a January day, a simple act of kindness tragically ended the life of Miguel 'Chuito' Lopez Jr., a 53-year-old man from Vineland, New Jersey. On January 15, 2017, Lopez, a longtime barber at a local shop, offered a ride to a man whose vehicle had crashed in Bridgeton. That man was Jule L. Hannah. For reasons that remain unclear, while inside Lopez's vehicle, Hannah fired a gun multiple times, killing the man who had stopped to help him.
The grim discovery was
made around 8:30 a.m. on Spruce Street in Bridgeton, where police found Lopez deceased in the driver's seat of his car, which had crashed. He had been shot four times. The subsequent investigation into the violent death of the father of four spanned nine months and ultimately pointed detectives toward Hannah. Investigators determined that the fatal shots had been fired from the passenger seat of the vehicle.
In October 2017, Jule L. Hannah, then 35, of Bridgeton, was arrested and charged with the murder of Miguel Lopez. The case against him proceeded to trial, where he was found guilty of first-degree murder. In 2021, Hannah was sentenced to 45 years in state prison for the seemingly senseless killing.
However, the legal saga did not end there. In a surprising turn of events in August 2024, an appellate court overturned Jule Hannah's murder conviction. The court's decision was based on an issue with the presentation of cell phone tower data during the trial by a detective who was not deemed an expert on the matter. This ruling vacated the conviction and ordered a new trial, leaving the final chapter in the story of Miguel Lopez Jr.'s death to be written.
