In the early morning hours of November 1, 2023, a tragedy unfolded at the Days Inn hotel in Runnemede, New Jersey, that ended the life of 30-year-old Ivy Morris. A female, she was discovered by police inside the hotel suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite the efforts of first responders, she was pronounced deceased at the scene. The events that led to the discovery began around 1:48 a.m. when Runnemede Police responded to reports of both a shooting and a carjacking at the hotel.
As the investigation commenced, authorities identified the primary suspect as Ivy Morris's husband, 38-year-old Steven Burgess from Spring, Texas. It is alleged that after fatally shooting his wife, Burgess fled the hotel. In his attempt to escape, he reportedly carjacked a man at gunpoint outside the establishment, firing a shot at the vehicle's owner, who was not injured during the encounter.
The stolen vehicle provided Burgess a temporary means of escape from the immediate vicinity of the crime scene.
A multi-agency effort was quickly launched to locate and apprehend Steven Burgess. The investigation involved the Camden County Prosecutor's Office Homicide Unit, the Runnemede Police Department, and the Mount Laurel Police Department. Their collaborative work led them to Philadelphia, where Burgess was located. With the assistance of the U.S. Marshals NY/NJ Regional Fugitive Task Force, the U.S. Marshals Eastern PA Violent Crimes Task Force, and the Philadelphia Police SWAT Team, Steven Burgess was taken into custody later on the same day as the murder. He has since been charged with first-degree murder and is awaiting extradition back to New Jersey to face legal proceedings. While a motive for the killing has not been publicly released by investigators, the case remains an active and ongoing investigation with the possibility of additional charges being filed.
